Depression
Depression effects behaviour, thoughts and feelings and is seldom seen as a biological illness. Medical research has shown that depression occurs as a result of a chemical imbalance in the brain, although it can be caused, or worsened, by life problems. Almost every one of us has experienced feelings of being low, unhappy or 'blue' at some point that could be associated with a disruptive life event. However, any pervasive feelings of sadness lasting for more than two weeks that effects our general functioning is usually a sign of depression.
People with depression can't just 'snap-out of it'. Depression is a biological illness, but one that can be effectively treated. The feelings of despair, hopelessness, and helplessness can be alleviated through proper treatment and sufferers can live a fulfilling life, despite the illness.
Relationships
All couples go through 'rough patches' and very often these stormy periods can be learning experiences during which two people are finding out more about one another and what makes each tick.
However, there are times when crises occur that can't be described as just hitches or hiccups within a relationship. There can be infidelities, illness, preoccupations or just plain old falling out of love. There can exist a myriad other things that call for support from a neutral source if the relationship is to be saved at all - or if the pain of any breakup between a couple is to be kept to a minimum.
We offer support to adult couples, whether married or not or of any orientation, or just looking for advice on maintaining a good relationship.
